What are functional components?
Assesses fundamental understanding of Vue.js conventions, runtime behavior, and memory/performance considerations.
Hiring managers look for precision, avoidance of ambiguous jargon, and ability to explain trade-offs under real production conditions.
The functional components are just simple functions to create simple components just by passing a context. Every
functional component follows two rules,
- Stateless: It doesn't keep any state by itself
- Instanceless: It has no instance, thus no this
You need to define functional: true to make it functional. Let's take an example of functional components,
Vue.component('my-component', {
functional: true,
// Props are optional
props: {
// ...
},
// To compensate for the lack of an instance,
// we are now provided a 2nd context argument.
render: function (createElement, context) {
// ...
}
})
Note: The functional components are quite popular in React community too.

Candidate Response Strategy & Interview Tips
- Start with a concise one-sentence summary: Deliver a direct, confident answer first before expanding into nuances.
- Demonstrate real-world trade-offs: Discuss where this approach excels and when you would avoid it in production systems.
- Discuss complexity & edge cases: Proactively explain time/space complexity or boundary conditions (null values, scale limits).
- Prepare for interviewer follow-ups: Technical hiring panels frequently probe deeper into concurrency, backward compatibility, or alternative libraries.
